roof condensation

Sick Building Syndrome is the official term to describe the symptoms caused by modern building practices and chemicals used in homes today.

Due to inadequate ventilation and contaminates sourced from solvents, upholstery, carpets, paints, adhesives, varnishes, fabrics and composite wood products. Vehicles idling in garages, disinfectants, cleaning chemicals, personal care products – cosmetics, deodorants containing aluminium etc – the list goes on and on. Then you have got cooking, showers, wood burning stoves, heating, stored chemicals, pesticides etc, etc, etc – need we go on.

The gases from all these products are called VOC’s (volatile organic compounds). Some examples of the chemicals but not limited to are xylene, toluene, benzene, methlene chloride, formaldehyde, ethylene glycol and perchloroethylene.

These and then some, are the culprits that contribute to Sick Building Sydrome in the home.

So why is roof ventilation a necessity?

For all the obvious reasons. As the home has many protusions through the ceiling such as down lights, ceiling vents, exhaust fans from bathrooms and kitchens etc, etc that dump directly into the roof cavity. All of these protusions allow chemical contaminates to enter the roof cavity and without proper effective roof ventilation these contaminates will stay in the roof cavity and combine with the heat and moisture that has been allowed to build up in the roof cavity, with the moisture soaked insulation the roof cavity then becomes a breeding ground for mould, mildew, fungus, dust mite, bacteria you name it it is there, with the added possibility of termites drawn to the moisture. Quite a melting pot wouldn’t you say?

So you see it is pretty obvious why you need roof ventilation as a necessity if you value your own and your family’s health.

So for effective ventilation of the roof cavity and the ducting of bathrooms and kitchen exhaust fans.
